The Dusty South Crew is a youth organization from a suburb of the Kenyan capital Nairobi (Kitengela). Together with the local youth, the Dusty South Crew builds BMX tracks and practices spectacular tricks on the bike and skateboard.

The idea for the Dusty South Crew started in 2020, when a group of five teenagers wanted to pass the lockdown time with a creative activity. Together, they started building pump tracks for their BMX and practicing tricks on them. Now, about 20 kids and teens regularly come to the open meetings and learn to build complex ramps in a collaborative effort, build their confidence on a bike or skateboard, and play music during breaks. Environmental conservation is also one of the Dusty South Crew’s values.
In addition to simple fun, the work of the Dusty South Crew addresses an important social component, too: Kitengela, the place where the group is based, is characterized by high youth unemployment, which diminishes hope for future prospects for many young people. With the BMX meetings and the emerging community, the Dusty South Crew wants to offer young people in difficult times a meaningful occupation and a warm community. In this way, the group hopes to keep young people away from crime and drug use and offer them new perspectives.
At the moment, the Dusty South Crew can only offer its participants three bikes and one skateboard to train on. In the future, we would like to enable the Dusty South Crew – in addition to personal mentoring – to purchase more bikes as well as protective equipment and spare parts.

The Dusty South Crew is active as an independent initiative in Kenya. Abasha e.V. supports the Dusty South Crew in financing the sports program in Kitengela. Abasha transfers 100% of the donations of this campaign directly to the Dusty South Crew.
